Kottayam : On Tuesday, M Anjana, the district collector stated that the state government has provided her with information on the existence of a Maharashtra variant of coronavirus that is prevailing at a higher rate in the district. She further added, “We haven’t received the details about it. Though the UK and South Africa variants of the virus are less, the presence of Maharashtra virus is more”.
She also told, “Even though we haven’t received the details about it we have started taking precautions in the district against this variant”.
She is of the opinion that in order to curb the spread of the deadly virus, the district is carrying out two types of enforcement. There are places in the districts that are following the restrictions and enforcements that the government has announced. Leaving that, four panchayats and numerous wards where the TPR and the number of active cases are much more have been following stringent restrictions.
In respect to the vaccination drive, she opined that four mass vaccination centers and 86 other centers remained operative in the district when there was availability in the vaccines.
Anjana stated, “But we had to reduce the number of centres following the scarcity of vaccines. Currently seven countries are functioning in each taluk. Once we start getting more vaccines, the number of centres will be increased”.
In the meantime, on Tuesday, 2,970 people were detected covid positive. The number includes 7 health workers. The test positivity rate reached a mark of 30.81%. Kottayam municipality recorded the highest number of cases – 426.
Pathanamthitta district recorded 1,163 positive cases among which 14 people have come from abroad.
